How To Look After Your Hair This Winter

winter hairJust when you thought your hair had survived the summer, winter has to come along and try it’s best to sabotage your shiny protected locks. But, just as we did in the summer, we can look after our hair and embrace the colder months with a spring in our step, and a head of hair to be proud of.

If anything, the colder weather means I have to use heated appliances such as my hairdryer more than ever. That combined with having the heating on more, my hair is soon feeling dry and brittle.

Washing Your Hair

If you can get away with it, try washing your hair less. Or if you do have to wash your hair frequently, make sure you use a deep conditioner once a week to replace any lost oils. You can buy hair conditioning masks, or you can make your own. Read my homemade hair mask guide for recipes.

Use lukewarm water, or even cold if you can handle it, to rinse out your shampoo and conditioner. The cold water will seal moisture into your cuticles, whereas hot water (especially water that is way too hot) will damage your hair.

Styling Your Hair

Try to reduce how much you use heated appliances – or at least protect your hair with a protection spray. If I had to choose between drying my hair or straightening it I would go with the hair straighteners. I just try to wash my hair at a time when I am going to be hanging out at home so it can dry in the warmth of inside. I then use my hair straighteners or straightening brush to get it under control and straight.

Eat Well

We are what we eat and this applies to your hair too. Cut down on the sugar and processed foods and increase the intake of fresh foods. Drink lots of water and include foods rich in vitamin A and Omega 3 fatty acids. Carrots are a great source of vitamin A and oily fishes such as salmon are full of healthy fats. Avocados are another good source of good for you fats. Eat and drink for healthy hair and your body will thank you for it.

Visit Your Hairdresser

Don’t be tempted to skip going to the hairdressers. By getting your hair regularly trimmed your hair will stay healthy and get treated to a loving shampoo and condition at the same time. Many hairdressers massage your scalp whilst they are washing it – not only does this feel great, it’s also good for stimulating blood flow and protecting your hair follicles.

Wear A Hat

On those really bitterly cold winter days make sure you protect your hair outside by wearing a hat. You’ll not only protect your hair from the elements, you’ll have a nice warm head and body too! Also – it’s the perfect excuse to go and buy a new hat ?
